In 1882, when he was about 22 years old, M. D. Martin established himself in the carriage business, originally as a member of the firm of H. Martin & Son.  The H. Martin & Son company was located at 26 North George in York, PA.  He worked there with his father until 1888 when M. D. Martin established the Martin Carriage Works.  He was President of the company.
